REACH

- Gotland University exchange project in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage

The Swedish Institute launched the Visby program around 1998 as a way to meet the need for institutional and democracy building via exchanges between partners from secondary and higher education institutions in the surrounding Baltic Sea Area emphasising the Baltic Sea States and north-western Russia.

Gotland
University was with its internationally active researching/lecturing staff in archaeology and building conservation among the first to engage in the program when the REACH project started in the autumn of 1998. During the project’s seven years the exchange and understanding between partner institutions has led to participation in bigger research projects and bi-lateral agreements. New partner institutions for Gotland University since two years back are the Faculty of History and Department of Archaeology at Belarus State University and Kiev Podil Archaeological Expedition.

Every spring and summer groups of students in archaeology and building conservation from Gotland University have done practical field work for two weeks in their subjects in any of our partner institutions in north-western Russia (in archaeology The Institute for the History of Material Culture Russian Academy of Sciences, Novgorod State University) or in Latvia (Cecis Museum of History) and recently outside Minsk. The Building conservation group has undertaken study visits to different institutions in the Baltic Sea Area (
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Kaliningrad). One of our lecturers in Archaeo-osteology Dr Sabine Sten has just come back from a successful lecturing tour in Belarus and Ukraine.
