The Visby Program, Summer University
The Visby Program Summer University was met with great enthusiasm when it began last year. Students from northwest Russia, Belarus and Ukraine were invited to participate in Summer University courses throughout Sweden. Some 230 students (out of 550 applicants) visited seven Swedish universities and folk high schools for a couple of weeks to attend lectures and discussion forums on the role the social sciences play in society and in life.
The topics discussed in the courses were very much appreciated by the students. A student evaluation report showed that new perspectives on study methods were valued highly, as were discussions about the teacher’s role and pedagogical methods. Information about alternative study plans, networking with Swedes and amongst fellow students from all three countries, was an eye opening experience for many.
The 2006 Summer University will be even more specialized with academic themes such as cross cultural communication, gender issues, human rights in education and multiculturalism.
